What is backdraft? When it is windy, the wind covers the bathroom and kitchen exit ducts called shunts. It stops odours, gases, damp, etc from leaving. Therefore, those odours go back down and are what cause our bathroom to smell (a rotten egg smell). Normally, this happens when the Easterly, Westerly, North and South winds and the tradewinds blow.
(See the drawing to the left, the red colour represents the odours, gases, dampness trapped in the duct when it is windy. The blue represents the effect of the wind covering the exit).
